WW1 and the physical and emotional toll it had on families particularly in the Bega Valley was brought home to the audience by the various speakers – Sandra Florance (Bega) John Liston (Greigs Flat) who gave account of family members who lost their lives.  Tony Toussaint (Merimbula RSL) who has been involved in updating and maintaining war memorials in the Valley gave an account of his visit to the WW1 battlefields and photographed a number of the overseas resting places of Bega Valley Soldiers.

Bega Valley Shire mayor Michael Britten also spoke of family involvement and Lyn Ryan (BVGS vice president) read a moving poem written in 1918 for the grieving mothers of Candelo.

Member for Eden Monaro Peter Hendy also spoke about the commonwealth government’s role in the centenary commemoration and then declared the publication launched.

The 185 Servicemen      and   SPONSORS

There are 17 War Memorials within the Bega Valley Shire and Tathra is the only one which doesn’t show the name of a WW1 Serviceman.

There is a total of 1,031 WW1 names on these 16 Memorials but this is NOT the number of people who enlisted from the Bega Valley Shire. There are at least five servicemen whose names are shown on three different War Memorials within the Bega Valley Shire as well as a great number of men whose names are shown on two different Memorials within the Shire. This has been brought about by a particular serviceman maybe being born and brought up in one location, and then moving on to a different town or village within the Shire for employment. There are 891 servicemen whose names are shown on these Memorials and only one Nursing Sister shown. This is on the Candelo War Memorial and her name is Sister E.V. Godfrey. So a total of 892 people from the Bega Valley Shire enlisted in the Great War and whose names appear on the various War Memorials within the Shire.

Out of these 892 names, 185 men died as a result of the Great War.
